چکیده

The lowest temperatures ever measured have been produced by cascade adiabatic nuclear demagnetization of copper and rhodium. Ultimately, spontaneous antiferromagnetic ordering of rhodium nuclei is anticipated. High-sensitivity SQUID-NMR measurements at high nuclear polarization in low magnetic "elds have been used to study the mutual interactions between the nuclear spins of rhodium in the metal. Towards quantum magnetism with ultracold atoms

At ICAP we presented the efforts and progress at MIT towards using ultracold atoms for the realization of various forms of quantum magnetism. These efforts include a study of fermions with strong repulsive interactions in which we obtained evidence for a phase transition to itinerant ferromagnetism, the characterization of cold atom systems by noise measurements, and a new adiabatic gradient de...

Effect of temperature as well as heating and cooling cycles on rock properties

Temperature has a significant role in many actions performed on rocks. An example would be the effect of temperature on rocks in the burial of nuclear waste, geothermal energy extraction, deep oil well drilling, and fires in tunnels. In addition, due to diurnal/nocturnal as well as seasonal temperature variations, rocks undergo a process of heating and cooling. In the present work, the effect o...

Relaxation of polarized nuclei in superconducting rhodium

Nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates were measured in normal and superconducting (sc) rhodium with nuclear polarizations up to p = 0. 55. This was sufficient to influence the sc state of Rh, whose T(c) and B(c) are exceptionally low. Because B(c)<<B(loc) and the short-range spin-spin interaction is unchanged, the nuclear spin entropy was fully sustained across the sc transition. The relaxation...

Double-spin-flip resonance of rhodium nuclei at positive and negative spin temperatures

Sensitive SQUID-NMR measurements were used to study the mutual interactions in the highly polarized nuclear-spin system of rhodium metal. The dipolar coupling gives rise to a weak double-spin-flip resonance. The observed frequency shifts allow deducing separately the dipolarlike contribution and the isotropic exchange term. For the first time, such measurements were extended to negative absolut...

Polarized Nuclei in Normal and Superconducting Rhodium

We have performed SQUID-NMR measurements on rhodium nuclei at ultralow temperatures. With initial polarizations of up to p = 0.95, the susceptibility data showed clear indications of an antiferromagnetic tendency, but nevertheless no signs of nuclear magnetic ordering. The lowest actually measured nuclear temperature was 280 pK, whereas the lowest nuclear temperatures achieved were below 100 pK...
